Work At Home
Give up the Commute - Not the Income
Work at Home: Give up the Commute--Not the Income
Working from home is a joy and a challenge.
Imagine waking up every morning, making a fresh pot of coffee and going to
work in your pajamas. While it might seem like a distant fantasy, it is a
reality for many people. Working from home, or telecommuting as it is
often called, is a career that sounds like a dream come true, and can be a
very rewarding experience. It does, however, take considerable time and
dedication to successfully hold down a work at home career.
Working from home appears to be the ideal situation, especially for
parents or others who have difficulty leaving home for long periods of
time. After all, who wouldn’t want to spend all day at home and still earn
a living wage? Work from home careers are more difficult to find than
typical brick-and-mortar jobs, as fewer companies offer distance positions
and there is a large applicant base. A person needs to search long and
hard to find a true work from home job, and it can be disappointing to
find out it can take months, even years, to support yourself from home.
A wide variety of positions are available to work at home employees. A
large percentage of distance jobs are call center positions. These jobs
are often customer service related positions for large corporations and
require patience, understanding and courtesy. Data entry and virtual
secretary jobs are also gaining popularity, as growing businesses need to
outsource secretarial and organizational duties. For those who enjoy the
freedom to work for a number of clients, freelancing positions are also
very popular. People with a passion for writing can gather jobs from
numerous clients, and those with an artistic flare can settle into a
graphic design career. Most people who freelance spread themselves out
over a number of clients to ensure that they always have a steady volume
of assignments available.
While working from home seems like an ideal blending of work and family,
it can be a difficult career choice. Working from home requires dedication
and a secluded office environment. A work from home career often requires
a set schedule very similar to those of a brick-and-mortar job. Dedicated
blocks of work time must be set aside to complete tasks in an appropriate
length of time. Many positions, such as customer service jobs, must be
completed in a quiet, noise-free environment to show professionalism and
this can be difficult with a house full of noisy children. Telecommuting
is often more challenging than standard office work, although the
struggles are outweighed by the flexibility offered by working from home.
Working from home offers the chance to earn a wage, support your family
and yet still be home to enjoy your family. Telecommuting offers employees
the chance to enjoy working from the safety and comfort of their own home,
although it can be a challenge to stay focused, gather your resources, and dedicated enough to
complete tasks as assigned. Working from home might seem like a dream come
true, but fulfilling that dream takes time, effort and dedication.
